New York Struggles Continue

during Game Five of the 2015 World Series at Citi Field on November 1, 2015 in the Flushing neighborhood of the Queens borough of New York City.

Once the confetti dropped down on the football field when the clock struck 0:00 in NRG Stadium, I could finally take a massive sigh of relief. The Falcons came up just short, falling to the New England Patriots 34-28 in a Super Bowl classic. It is always tough to be a New York fan in a city with passionate Atlanta fans, but I can rest easy for the next year knowing the Falcons could not bring home a Super Bowl ring.

The Atlanta Falcons reached the Super Bowl this year for the first time since 1999. The Falcons have been putting up historic numbers all season, and, with the help of key playmakers like Julio Jones and Vic Beasley, fans had every reason to be excited.

As a New York Jets fan, I had to deal with another struggling season, finishing at a meager 5-11 with little hope for the future.

The Falcons do just about everything better than the Jets. I cannot think of anything to say to strengthen my case that my team is better than theirs. I can only pray that the Jets have a strong 2017 season. However, my only argument is that my team has more Super Bowl rings than the Falcons. After all, the goal for any team is to win a championship.

NBA star Russell Westbrook agrees, saying he only wants to play for championships, despite nearly averaging a triple-double during the season.

“I don’t play for All-Star nods or All-Star bids,” Westbrook said. “I play to win championships and compete at a high level. It will work out.”

Chances are, if someone is a Falcons fan, they are also an Atlanta Braves fan and an Atlanta Hawks fan. The Braves dominated the late 20th and early 21st centuries in the baseball world and have historically won the overall head-to-head series against the New York Mets, down 437-364. However, the Mets still have more World Series rings than the Atlanta Braves, with the Mets holding two, while the Braves have their lone ring in 1997.

The New York Knicks have been somewhat holding their own with the Hawks historically, but recently, the Hawks have been better, edging us in the head-to-head matchups 106-104. Once again, the Knicks still have the edge in NBA championships, leading 2-1.

I really wish I could add something else to my resume of New York teams. Championships we have won as early as 31 years ago in 1986.

Being a New York fan has taught me to always keep my chin up during the rough times and to really appreciate the good ones. For the majority of my elementary school and middle school years, all of my favorite New York teams finished at the bottom of the standings. Now that I am in high school, I am starting to see minor growth in my teams.

In 2015, the New York Mets were only a couple of games away from winning the World Series. Future New York Knick star Kristaps Porzingis has turned the franchise into a potential playoff-winning team. The Jets still continue to struggle, but I can still boast about the ring they have to Falcons’ fans.

Despite the recent hardships, I have to hope for a better future for New York as the confetti continued to pile on the football field.
